Hello,

I am Dan from the uk with a mk1 escort with a pinto currently and been watching your videos on you tube and need a turbo on my pinto! Smile

What I need to know is how can I get around the 300bhp mark from the pinto?

I am looking to get the frofix manifold off ebay from Norway and a holset hx35 turbo running megasquirt.

Fit a pinto 205block with cosworth pistons and rods, aftermarket injectionssystem, a lightly ported head, a nice camshaft and 15--20psi of boost depending on how good the mapper is.

Mikael,

When you say aftermarket injection system, what is the best one to go for as I notice that all of the pinto's in the videos seem to run a different inlet manifold the the efi I currently have, I know that is not going to be good enough for 300hp but will I need to go 8 injectors with it or will 4 high flow ones be enough?

An intercooler is on the list as well but when you say lightly ported head, how far do you need to go on the head? I have a very well ported head ( n/a ) on the 2.1 bottom end currently but will that be too much??

I use Megasquirt and Haltech, a cheap system that will do fine but if you want a smother ride a autronic, vipec, link or samething like that is needed.


Standard inlet manifold will do actually, i make my own but that is because standard is so ugly Smile

4 high flow injectors is best, you will need 440cc or bigger to make 300bhp . The better head you use the more power you will gain a lower boost

for example

100bhp engine will require 30psi of boost for 300bhp
150bhp engine will require 15psi of boost för 300bhp

Can I ask why you use haltech and megasquirt? Does megasquirt not do the proper job?

Cool I know what you mean it is ugly yes but if it does the job with bigger injectors then I am all for it I think. That is good news about the head then, will need a cam swap as it is a rally cam so a bit too lumpy and wild for a turbo use, was thinking more a fast road '285' cam for turbo use!

less boost is good for me as would like to run a low and high boost setting on a switch ideally so daily I can poodle about with 250ish and then flip the switch for some more boost and hold on tight!

Ahh i meant i use Megasquirt or haltech. Thats the two system i tested so far.

I think you should try out the camshaft you are using now. do you know what bhp you have now?

Not sure what sort of power it runs curently but I would say it is around 140 - 160 hp max so with a turbo would be a nice big increase but would need to lower compression quite a bit to get any decent boost running through it, hence why I was thinking of using a coswrth bottom end and that head.

The cam is a kent cams RL1 which has a 300+ duration which I think might be a little oo much!? But if you think it will work i am happy to try it out!

I looked up 440cc injectors, they seem a standard fit on supra's, are these ones suitable?

You can at least try out the camshaft. You don´t have access to Ethanol fuel? It works well on engines with high compression and turbo. You can for example easy run 1bar on 10,0:1

Supra injectors have a different kind of seal, en friend had some problem with them on his bmw engine but it may work

E85 ethanol? There is one place near to me and that is about 100 mile round trip to get it! Sad Think I will just stick with the 100ron stuff I can get anywhere around where we live.

I thought that might be the case, will have to look at cosworth injectors and see what i can find, what would you reconmend on a fuel pump? 220 litres an hour or more?

Inlet manifold has arrived, hoping to win a turbo (holset HX35) on ebay in the next few days but they are quite hard to come by over here, are there any other alternatives to the Holset that don't cost a fortune?

Vi mostly use walbro 255 (255l/h) good pump with nice price

You can look after Borg Warner s200, garrett GT37. Garret gt30 or 35 works nice for your goal

Certainly fives me a lot more to think abuot! I have another question on flywheels and clutches!

Do you use a standard flywheel or is a lightened one good enough for the job? What clutches do you guys use as I doubt a standard one would take the power for too long?!

That's good news then as I thought I was going to have to go for a paddle clutch. Changing the clutch is not too bad as I have a large tunnel in the car for getting the box out easily.

Will post up some pictures soon of the bits I have got together and will commence the build once I have manifoldand turbo.
