Just wanted to intoduce myself.

Name is Joel and I have come here looking for 2.9L turbo information. You guys here seem to know your stuff when it comes to these 2.9L engines.

I have a 1992 ranger pickup that I'll be turbo charging and all the stuff I want to do has been does by you guys so instead of redesigning the wheel I will pick your brains for information.

My plans for my truck are this.

I have currently installed an american 2.9L from 1989, and have a turbo kit I assembled a couple years ago for a different engine. The turbo is a T3/T4 hybrid from a Datsun 280ZX. I will be using 295cc injectors. Just got my Megasquirt (MS1) ECU. Just need to order an intercooler. I plan to build an upper intake similar to the Cosworth 2.9L, and use a Throttle plate from a 5.0L truck engine, Which is a dual bore, similar to the one you guys get with the 2.9L

Thank you, and yes it is because of him I now have this obsession to go forward with this project.

Here is a picture of the truck.

Engine

Want it to look like this when painted.

Now for the good stuff. This is the turbo kit I put together on a 4.0L engine that I have in my BroncoII.

Just for Fun a Picture of the BroncoII.

The 2.9L aftermarket here in America stinks. What's the availability of performance parts for you guys in Europe?

I want to build a mean V6 and will need some help from you guys.

Does ARP have a head stud kit? Are you guys just using the factory torque to yeild head bolts.

For the Ken Cam, what is the price they run for you guys. (Doesn't matter what currency I can do the conversion)

What problems do you guys face with the valve train, and any good solutions? I know about removing the springs on the rocker shaft, and replacing with a piece of tube. What about push rods?

Thanks in advance.

England do have a loot of performanceparts for the v6, but mostly for naturaly aspirated engines. Only mods that i have done to my v6 engine is the camshaft, lifters and springs and 12:9 headbolts. The rest is stock including valvetrain. Works fine and i think the european engine is better in many ways

around 5000swedish kronor for the camkit

Clearly the Cam kit includes the lifters, pushrods, and cam? Seems like alot of money for just the Cam.

Thanks for the info.

I don't plan to push nearly as much HP as what your getting but if I can get 250-300 out of my setup with 10 PSI boost I will be happy. Everyone around here seems to put Ford V8's in the small trucks. I want to be different. The other option would be to find a 2.3L turbo from a Merkur and run that. But again it's too common for my likes.

The American 2.9L's are somewhat dependable and last forever, but they fall short once the valvetrain gets tired. Once the pushrods get worn out they suffer from the valve tick that so many 2.9L engines here face. The 2.9L here are pretty common in the junkyards so finding another one is not a problem. I now feel bad for sending around 5 complete running 2.9L engines to the metal recycler. I just never new of the possiblities of the little cologne engine.

It´s a kit with springs, lifters and camshaft.

My car with no mods done on the engine except the turboconversion gave 367bhp @ 15-16psi

Any chance of having a peek at your timing table, and fuel Map?

I'm seriously impressed, and this is giving me hope on my project. If i can eventually blow the doors off a 5.0L mustang I'll be giddy like a school girl. Now if I could wallop my Brother-inlaws car that would be AWESOME.

Mikael your Capri could give him a run. He's got an 83 Datsun 280ZX that has 412 Hp to the wheels. Nearly the same mods you have to your car, just a much smaller turbo. He was running a 6.0L diesel turbo. I've helped with alot of the Mods, and he was one of the reasons I did a turbo on the 4.0L. It was kinda a dare. He kept asking when i was going to do it. I asked if he had a turbo for me and the next day He pulled out the old T3/T4, that I currently have.

I have a guide (in swedish) but you can see the fueltable and the sparktable for the 367bhp engine

AWESOME. Thanks a bunch. I'll be picking your brain even more as I get things going. Just too damn cold here right now to work on it. No heat in my garage.

by the way I'll be looking for a Skogenracing sticker for the truck, so that all the V8 guys know they got beat by the best V6 tuners. Laughing

I was out in the shop for a couple hours lastnight trying to clear up any lose ends on the truck. It still needs to go out for inspection before I get the tags put on it.

Pulled out the stock 14 lb/h injectors and tossed in a set of 19 lb/h I had in one of my 4.0L blocks. I know the 19's are good. The original 14's were making more clatter than the valvetrain. I'm also trying to hunt down the Check Engine Light issue. I'm not running the original O2 for the 2.9L engine. I think that might be the issue. I have ordered a new one along with new intake runner gaskets. The goal here is to get it running under its own power N/A then when all the snow melts I will start putting the turbo stuff together.

I want to get it on the road and start driving it around.

Side exit exhaust. it's a 2.25" right now but will get replaced with a full 2.5" or 3" back from the muffler.

Engine triple gauge installed as the Ford Gauges are not reliable.

Since the power plug was where the gauges are now I moved it to under the light switch.

As the truck sits right now.

Playing around with intake designs. Came up with this one. The reason for the dual bore for the throttle body is because I have a dual bore TB from a 302 truck engine. It's bigger than my current one and I have 2 to play with. I also have a single bore TB from a 4.0L I could adapt, if I had to. Anything will be better than the 53 mm one that is there now. The 86-87 American 2.9s had a 58 mm bore. May prove difficult to find one on short notice.

You do know that it´s not so important on a boosted engine? I would say you could manage 500bhp easy with stock manifold and throttle body.

If I could get the intake plenum that you guys have for a decent price with the TB I would go that route, but I'm not going to spend over $200 USD to get one. I can make one for less. Would be sick if I could make one out of Carbonfiber.

I may change it up some After looking at it it looks to be complicated and getting the mandrel bends will prove to be $$$$.

Success. I have it nearly running 100% in it's N/A state. Tracking down a Check Engine light. Next step is to get the truck on the road and put some kilometers on it to work out any occurring bugs.

Once on the road I'll start into the MS1 build.

One of the last pieces I need to find is an intercooler.

Got the Check engine light cleared. Running good now.

Need to get the wheels off to inspect the brakes before it goes in for inspection.

Friday it gets inspected.

Once done I'm going to start building my MS box and get it on the truck and running.

Spring time the turbo will go on.

Here was the list of things to fix to pass inspection.

1. Front caliper slider pins splitting Done
2. Tighten front wheel bearings loose Done
3. New front shocks one was shot Done
4. Replace hanger bearing Done
5. Fix Y-pipe (Hitting the rad arm cross member) Done
6. Remove tailgate Done
7. Seized park brake cable
8. replace rear shoes
9. Get drums turned
10. Rebuild steering gear cuz it's leaking.

The tailgate was on there solid but they were saying it was loose. It's not required for inspection so forget that. I'll remove it and put it back on later.

So it's been on the road for nearly 2 weeks and it's been running like a bag of dirt. Couple things I want to try, see if it helps the situation.

FINALLY, I have it running decent. Last bits for the MegaSquirt came in today. I'll start building the StimJim Simulator, then start on the actual MS build. I'd like to get the truck running with the MS installed before putting the boost pump on.

I am thinking about looking for another engine to use as I am having oil pressure issues that leave me with reservations on turbocharging this block. Could go boom right away from a weak bottom end.

Looking to get a Melling M328 High volume oil pump for either this engine or another should I find one.

Second round design for the intake.

Started on the MegaSquirt build. Got the MegaStim V2.21 built. I'm about 1/2 way into the Megasquirt right now. Pictures will come soon.
