Any recommendation for a strong solid rear axle?
To replace the Atlas axle on my Capri.

I've been offered a Volvo 940 (2.0) axle, but know nothing about their spec or capabilities.

The Volvo 940 axle will probably be to wide on your Capri. Mikael is running a Volvo 240 "1031" axle on hes Capri and that work Great. The difference between the 1030 and 1031 axle is the ring gear size. 1031 is bigger and more durable but Crille with the Taunus turbo here on Skogen is running a 1030 axle and that works too.

1031 is the stronger one but i sure 1030 will hold for a lot of abuse as well.

Are the 1030 and 1031 used in different models? 1031 in larger engined?

Found this one for sale...

3.7:1 ratio is ideal too.
Did Mikael have to have his axle narrowed for use on the Capri?

Do you know what the ring gear sizes are on these axles?

I actually use the 1030 on the capri. It doesent matter anyway because it´s the driveshafts that is the weak point

The volvoaxle fits fine on the capri, but i think the 8 inch mustang axle works just as fine and perhaps easyer to get hold on in your country?

Have you managed to snap any driveshafts?
Also did you covert it to 4x108 PCD?

Mustang parts aren't really easy or cheap to find here. Volvo parts are still cheaper and easier.
That one I posted above look ok?

i think u can use same aftermarket differentials on 1030 and 1031 so i think i doesnt matter.. I use a 1030 with a other diff and it works good.

Mikael has changes a set o shafts but he had run a whole season on them..

I would just want to be running a welded diff, so a cheap open diff is ideal.

Did Mikeal's shafts break, or just twist?

Also is he still using Ford wheels? How was the bolt pattern converted?

The one on sale there is a 1031, you can see it because it got a "notch" on the top of it, the 1030 doesn't. 1030 and 1031 is used in different models, but the GLT almost always have the 1031. Anyways, this can be different in UK.

Go for it, the Volvo 240 axle got a track of 1350 mm.

The capri S -78 got a track of 1380 mm

As Mikael says, an 8" axle (from a mustang) may be worth looking into. Loads of bits available too-diffs, gears & brakes options. Getting rare, but I've just found 1 for my project, so they are out there. If you get an earlier axle they are ford 4 stud too, or later ones have 5x4.5"PCD, which opens up a whole load of wheel choice options. I may have some 4 stud shafts cheap if you do go down this route.
If you have a big budget (I don't) you could look at Currie enterprises, or speak to Geoff Hauser @ Hauser racing 01933 682500, he'll sort tell you what's what. He's got my strange shafts on order at the moment because my axle's being narrowed.

Mine driveshafts twisted until it broke

I use Volvo pattern at the rear. Don´t want to redrill it because of the braking risk. I have a plan to change to BMW pattern in the front (5x120) and use 5x108 -> 5x120 spacers in the rear.

Cool!

Might be best to use 4x108 to 5x108 adapters. Especially as the Volvo axle is 40mm narrower, would end up being the same if 20mm adapters were used at each side!

I have to use the Ford pattern as I have so many wheels in that fitment!
Especially my expensive Image 9x15 RS split rims!

I want to enter the British Drift Championship with the car, and one of the major rules is that no chassis rail cutting is allowed. This pretty much rules out IRS conversions.

Also going by the Mk2 Escorts in this year's championship I have seen that a live axle can perform perfectly well.

Mikael,
why dont use parts from Ford Granada in front with PCD 5x112mm?
You can get a pair from me!!!!
And some adapters from 5x108 to 5x112.
With this PCD u can use Rims from Mersedes, Audi, Volkswagen T4/5 and a lot more!!!
Thausand of different type wheels!
Regards
Michael

Don´t want 5x112. it´s easyer to get hold on rims with 120x5 thats looks nice.

I've just had spacers made up to convert 5x108 to 4x108! Looks strange but will work nicely!
